This saying, given by Herepo Harawira, denotes fearlessness in someone who is unafraid to confront danger or a challenge.85 It also emphasises that courage is more important than size and brute force.

Ngā maramara o Rāhiri.

The chips of Rāhiri.

‘Raahiri and his warriors brought together the scattered groups descended from Nukutawhiti under the name of Ngaapuhi. His many descendants are referred to in [this] pepeha … and from that saying forms of address peculiar to the Ngaapuhi dialect have resulted, that is, “E mara” to refer to more distant relatives and “E tamara maa” to refer to closer relatives.’86 The pepeha therefore embodies linguistic information particular to Ngāpuhi, and shows the relationship between the tribe and sub-tribe (the tree) and the descendants and members of the tribe (the chips).
